Welcome to the multi-generational workplace. Managing and participating in this environment welcome methods, such as mentoring, to keep the peace, turn the profit and meet the needs of your organization’s shifting workforce. Generational tension can wreak havoc in the workplace, but here’s where mentoring can make a difference. Mentoring recognizes and takes advantage of the distinct skill sets and differences employees have to offer. While traditional mentoring offers many benefits, it does not take into account the generational gap which is prevalent as five generations are working side-by-side in the workplace.
Reverse mentoring is where it’s at! This new wave of mentoring has junior employees sharing their tech savviness and multitasking skills with more senior colleagues while also granting access for the junior employee to their colleagues who have years of experience and leadership in the field. Creating opportunities for the generations to work together is a win-win situation as research has shown a higher degree of learning takes place with cross-generational pairings, an increase in the recruitment and retention of talented employees is experienced and job satisfaction increased overall.

Every day the game changes because somebody, somewhere, is inventing the next new thing. As technology managers we must make a choice: survive then die, or adapt and thrive. People are by nature clever and adaptive but our desire for order and control can shut down any human ingenuity. Is there a way to have it both ways at the same time? Steve offers a three dimensional model for surviving, collaborating, and thriving in an era when technology changes come from every direction.
